We all have things that really bring us joy and motivates us to be better people on this planet. People are motivated by many different things in life. What motivates one person could be and is typically something totally different from the person that sits in traffic on their way to work or on the bus or even at the grocery store shopping. Motivation sometimes comes and goes but some motivations stay with us our whole lives. It could be a life event or events that motivates an individual to what to do a particular thing in life. It could be personal accomplishments, helping others or maybe no motivation at all. I was thinking to myself, what motivates me to be the type of person I am today. Like most people, it was life events growing up and how I viewed the world when I was you and how I view the world today.
I use a term called social enrichment to describe what motivates me to do a lot of what I do. I like to see others succeed and I want to help others succeed. Social enrichment, in my eyes, is not the definition you see if you typed in those words in Google. To me Social Enrichment is a feeling of satisfaction in seeing someone success by way of something that I may have said to them or resources I provided that made then succeed where they previously failed. Giving and seeking advice from others is a common thing and shows that people are teachable and able to teach. Why reinvent the wheel when you can minimize mistakes by consulting with someone who has already been through what you plan to undertake? The flip side of the aforementioned is that you do not know what success looks like until you fail first. Some mistakes can be more costly than others but what motivates you to seek out what you do not know? If undertaking an endeavor, it is important to understand the cause and effects of your decisions and how it might affect you and others. So understanding what motivates you to do what you do can have far reaching implications on yourself and others.
In my example, my motivation is to see small business others succeed in having a healthy and profitable customer base because my parents were small business owners growing up and they failed. There is no substitute for experience and learning from experiences can motivate you to do or not do certain things in the future. Technology back in the 1980’s is certainly not what it is today. The internet was just becoming a thing and there were no online resources on how to address particular issues such as running a small business. Many times you would have to reach out to other small business owners but that was nearly impossible due to the long hours of being a small business owner (and little personal time). Online resources today are practically endless, comprehensive and can be accessed 24/7. My point is that I wanted to create an app-based platform that allows small business owners to create their own referral marketing campaigns and my company Dealium could host those campaigns for only a few dollars a day. I have created a value-added referral marketing solution so that small business owners do not have to reinvent their own wheel.
My company’s mission is to help small business owners succeed by providing an app-based, affordable referral marketing tool that helps address a very common small business issue which is customer acquisition. Many small businesses know what their problem is but don’t know how to solve it. Also, they don’t have the time, expertise and financial resources to create their own solution, run and maintain it and that is Dealium’s value proposition. Provide an app-based platform that will be widely acceptable by the target market that allows them to quickly search for, refer and be reward for their value referrals. My motivation is to provide a value-added tool that is frictionless and efficient in helping small businesses find that next new customer at a lower marketing cost than other traditional marketing tools.
So my motivations in life are different than the person sitting next to me whose motivation might be that they love being at the beach and just listening to the waves. Who doesn’t love hearing the sounds of the ocean but what motivates me to work long hours everyday is to help that small business like my parents had when I was growing up have a marketing tool that is going to give them a better chance to succeed. I enjoy creating solutions that will make some ones life easier and not have to struggle the way my parents did as small business owners. My motivation is to solve some ones pain pain, particularly in the world of small business ownership. That is what motivates me to rise early each morning and stay up late working on building and providing a solution. So my social enrichment is seeing others succeed because remember, there are over 30 million small businesses in the US and over 90% of those businesses regularly rely on customer referrals for new business. My motivation is to create a “day in the life” solution that is deeply integrated into the life of a small business owner.
